The Colorado Mesa University women’s basketball team never trailed against the Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves and won 91-56 on Saturday. The Mavs handed the Thunderwolves their only second loss of the season.
Guard Jaylin Duran had the hot hand early for the Mavs. During the first quarter, Duran outscored the Thunderwolves, 14-13. At the end of the first quarter, CMU was ahead, 28-14.
The Mavs did not let up in the second quarter. CMU scored 29 points in the quarter while limiting Pueblo’s offense to 13 points. At halftime, CMU was leading, 57-27.
The Thunderwolves never threatened CMU’s lead in the second half. In the third quarter, both teams scored 20 points. At the end of the third quarter, CMU was ahead 77-47.
In the fourth quarter, the Mavs’ defense allowed the Thunderwolves’ lowest scoring quarter of the game with nine. As the buzzer sound, CMU knocked off the Thunderwolves, 91-56.
Guards Duran and Erin Reichle led the Mavs in scoring with 22 points each while Reichle finished with six assists. Guard Bryanna Adams added 18 points and five rebounds. CMU shot 51.7 percent from three point range and 49.2 percent for the game.
The Mavs’ defense limited the Thunderwolves shooting to 13.3 percent from the three point line and 34 percent for the game. Pueblo’s Tuileisu Anderson led her team in scoring with 18 points.
With the win, the Mavs finished the regular season with a 20-6 record and went 17-5 in the RMAC.
The team is now awaiting to see who they play in the RMAC tournament.
