The Mavericks dominate in their only game of the weekend against Park University (PU) as they won 92-37.
Seven different Maverick scored double-figure points against the Buccaneers. Colorado Mesa University (CMU) shot 55.7% from the field and they recorded 27 assists in the game as well.
Freshman forward Emily Cavey led CMU in scoring with 13 points, and she shot six for eight from the floor. Freshman forward Lauryn Deede was the second-leading scorer for the Mavericks with 12 points and she recorded four rebounds as well.
CMU opened the first quarter on a 14 to four run in the opening five minutes of the game and they sustained that production throughout the quarter. The Mavericks continued to dominate the quarter as they increased their lead to 20-5 with 3:13 minutes left in the first quarter.
The first quarter ended with CMU up 26-7 as freshman guard Kylie Kravig scored the final basket of the quarter with seven seconds left.
The Mavericks continued their dominance in the second quarter as they extended their lead to 24 points with 6:26 left in the half. Haley Valencia then answered with the first of two shots from the field in the quarter to give them 10 points in the game.
CMU answered with a run of 10 unanswered points to put them up by 32 points in the second quarter. Both teams traded baskets to end the first half as CMU held a 44-12 lead.
The Mavericks then continued to dominate in the opening five minutes of the third quarter as they extended their lead to 61-17. The Buccaneer’s Jasmine Kelly got to the free-throw line and converted both shots and Kayla Schroeder buried a three-pointer to give PU 22 points in the game.
Both teams started to trade baskets at the end of the third quarter, but CMU held a 51-point lead at the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the most balanced scoring from both teams as CMU outscored PU 16-12 in the final quarter of the game.
Kianna Turenne started the fourth quarter off by getting into the paint and drawing a shooting foul just nine seconds into the quarter. She went to the free-throw line and went one for two.
Kelly came back for PU with a three-pointer with 8:15 left in the game. Deede came back with two jumpers of her own to put CMU back up by 51.
Deede scored all 12 of her points consecutively for the Mavericks in the fourth quarter to help close the game out. Kravig scored the final four points for CMU to finish the game with a 55-point lead.
The Buccaneers shot 23.1% from the field, but they turned the ball over 26 times in the game. The Maverick’s defense forced 13 steals and redshirt senior guard Daniella Turner compiled four of those steals for CMU.
The Maverick’s next game is Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 6:00 p.m. against Utah Valley University in an exhibition game.
