After two losses in California last weekend, the Colorado Mesa University women’s soccer team was looking for their first win of the year. After both teams were held scoreless for the first 85 minutes and the game was looking to be heading for overtime, upperclassmen Lauren Thompson took things into her hands.
Following a cross from Halie Bergeron, Thompson was able to send the ball past the Texas-Permian Basin goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. The goal was enough to give the Mavericks the 1-0 victory and their first win of the year.
The Mavericks outshot the Ravens 20-3 in the game, including 10-2 in shots on goal. CMU was also the winner in the corner kicks category, getting 6 by the final whistle while UTPB was held to 0.
Six yellow cards were handed out throughout the match, with the Mavericks receiving two of the six. The recipients of those cards were Jocelyn Ceccarelli and Madison Rasimas.
In goal for the Mavericks was freshman Jessica Jolley in her first collegiate match of her career. She finished the game with 2 saves and a clean sheet for her first win of her career.
