The Criterion requested and was sent over 20 police incident reports from 2025 for the unofficial Theta Xi house at 1904 N 7th St. CMU does not sanction Greek Life housing.
It connected the house to patterns of noise complaints, suspicious activity and harassment. This includes parties that were shut down due to noise (some registered through CMU’s Party Smart, some unregistered) and men catcalling and harassing women outside a shut-down party. Reports do not indicate that any single person was charged or directly associated with these actions.
These records confirm two previous allegations–discharge of a firearm and an assault.
On Sept. 27, 2025, between 1 and 2 a.m., a firearm was discharged at that address identified in several police reports as the Theta Xi fraternity house. The case report indicates that Gerald Nicholas Crater was arrested at this address on Oct. 2, 2025 on charges of “prohibited use of a firearm” and “reckless endangerment.” Both were related to the Sept. 27 incident.
Crater was listed as a resident at 1904 N 7th St at the time of his arrest. He was also named in a separate police report after he was questioned by police about headrests that were stolen by someone from CMU’s student-run transportation service MAVrides. He was not charged in that incident.
Crater was sentenced to 12 months’ probation and no jail time. Police reports and the arrest affidavit make no indication of any injuries stemming from the discharge of the firearm.
On Sept. 1, 2025 police reports indicate an investigation into an assault at that same address but the reporting party “did not wish to make a report or disclose details of the event” and “did not plan to return to CMU.”
The university temporarily prohibited all Theta Xi’s rushing activities as well. Theta Xi has since been placed on probationary status. The extent to which the police activity influenced these decisions remains unclear.
