A firearm was allegedly discharged at a Theta Xi party on Halloween Night last semester. Someone was allegedly injured from the shrapnel projectiles produced by the gunshot. This and other rumors have swirled around campus since the alleged incident.
Student Life prohibited Theta Xi from using its services following the incident last semester however the disciplinary action has not been directly linked to any specific incident.
Bejarano works with former Theta Xi President Jose Hernandez. She provided alleged details about “guys and girls being roofied” at the party and “Theta guys jumping boyfriends/male friends of ladies inside the Theta party.”
“I heard there was a shooting at a party hosted by Theta,” freshman cellular and molecular biology major Maclovia Bejarano said.
Allegations of what occurred at the party vary and include the aforementioned firing of a firearm indoors, physical altercations between students, cocaine usage during parties and instances of students receiving spiked alcoholic drinks.
No public details are available to verify Bejarano’s allegations and whether members of Theta Xi perpetrated those behaviors. Bejarano also notes that many different stories have been circulating about the exact events of the party.
Students believe that the compounding rumors of what happened during the party, such as the accusations in Bejarano’s account, likely forced disciplinary action from the university against Theta Xi.
“President Marshall found the Theta guys unfit for being on campus,” Bejarano said.
CMU takes a different position when referring to the official reason they took sudden disciplinary action against the fraternity.
“It was a communications issue,” Vice President of Student Services Roberto Montoya said. “We had asked that if any events happen at the houses that are maybe related to parties or maybe related to conduct that we be alerted.”
Montoya continued to explain that Theta Xi was not complying with this policy. He also mentioned that the fraternity’s membership changed following the incident.
“There were a number of folks on their roster that were removed,” Montoya said.
Montoya indicated that specific individuals were punished but did not relate it to a specific event. He did not confirm the exact motivations behind the removal of these former members. He also declined to comment on whether the probationary actions and removal of fraternity members were related to any alleged events.
Montoya explained that the university placed Theta Xi on a probationary period after Halloween, during which Student Life and the university sanctioned no Theta Xi events. Theta Xi receives funding from both mandatory member dues and Student Life for their activities. These activities are exclusive to their membership.
The university temporarily prohibited all Theta Xi’s rushing activities as well, which promote recruitment for the fraternity. Theta Xi has since been placed on probationary status.
“We have enabled them through some wonderful conversations with their national leadership to essentially recruit. However, we’re not sanctioning any parties or anything along those lines,” Montoya said.
Montoya declined to comment on whether or not the alleged firearm mishandling occurred or was perpetrated by members of Greek Life.
Theta Xi continues to operate on campus under new leadership. However, the fraternity’s Presence page still lists Hernandez as the President. Other student leadership listed includes Vice President Adam Fair, Treasurer Erik Aguirre, Recruitment Chair Colton Bowers and Recruitment Chair Ian Leach.
“Their new leadership has a real commitment to kind of reframing the perception of them,” Montoya said.
Theta Xi recently DJ’d at a CMU beach volleyball game. They will also table at the upcoming Spring Concert featuring The Driver Era to promote alcohol safety. These events may indicate a shift in the relationship between the university and the fraternity. It remains unclear if or when the university will allow Theta Xi to resume sanctioned off-campus parties and tailgates.
Members of Greek Life, including Theta Xi, and their respective organizations declined to comment on any allegations about what may have happened at their Halloween party.

Unfortunately it is too late for that. The defamation is already been done. Your continuous edits of the information confirm you acknowledge your original wording was intended to tarnish the reputation of theta xi. None of the allegations you claim have any factual proof behind them. Yet as a newspaper, you still decided to post them. Proof of each and every edit from the original to now already exist and are circulating. I will talk to you and your team. However, it will be in court.

Hi Jake, we have not censored any comments. They must be manually approved because that is how the site is set up.

Censorship of public comments about your integrity. This is perfect. Yes, keep making the lawsuit easier for us. I’ll see your team in court soon 🙂

Unfortunately for you, editing does not change the fact that there was serious defamation in your original article AND social media post which not only cannot be undone but you managed to include rumors with no evidence whatsoever. Also, incredibly outdated information (the leadership claimed in this article is from a year ago) this ties names with negative rumors non-related to them. I hope you have fun with the incoming lawsuits. Yes, plural.
