The Arc Mesa County Fashion Show dazzled the Asteria Theatre runway with “Empowered Elegance” as models fashioned their looks with fresh outfits from the local Arc Thrift Store. This event advocated and raised money for community members with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Models had varying levels of ability: some striking a pose or spinning at the front of the stage, while others received assistance from wheelchairs, white canes or an emcee’s helping hands. Everyone recieved ample encouragement and praise from the crowd, with claps and cheers.
Energetic pop music filled the background, which invigorated both the models and the audience. Roughly 75% of the orchestra section was packed with attendees, plus most second-level box seats were full for the duration of the fashion show.
All the models differed in age. Some were CMU students, including film major Cleo Wayt. The program given to audience members gave a brief description that introduced each model.
“[I]t’s a dream come true to be a model for the fashion show,” model Jeni Levan wrote in the program.
The models got to express their interests and hobbies as well. Atheria Knavel, a 2nd grader from Thunder Mountain Elementary enjoys a ton of activities including fishing, camping, skateboarding, basketball, playing with trucks, art and getting dirty.
The audience kept the energy up for each performer. Each time he door swung open, wild cheers and applause ensued.
The fashion show started at 7 p.m. but a cocktail hour was hosted before the show. This included a silent auction.
The program indicated that “[f]unds raised will directly support The Arc Mesa County’s programs, including advocacy for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Sibshops, a program for siblings of individuals with disabilities and many other essential community projects.”
Intermission halfway through allowed for more of the audience to bid at the silent auction. Items were donated by local members and businesses from the community.
Rowdy engagement from the crowd and the obvious enjoyment of the models made this year’s event a success.
