It was a hole in one for veterans’ housing as fraternity Kappa Sigma Mu hosted a charity golf tournament. Golfers took to the green at Redlands Mesa Golf course on Saturday, Oct. 26, as part of a “Military Heroes” fundraising campaign hosted by the fraternity
Members of the fraternity partnered to raise money for Homes For Our Troops, a non-profit organization dedicated to making homes accessible for veterans who suffered severe injuries from combat.
“I wanted to do this because I love giving back to our community, […] It’s a good day out if we can help improve other people’s days, that’s the mission at the end of the day,” said Sayre Harris, a fraternity member or “brother” within Kappa Sigma at Colorado Mesa University (CMU).
Two Air Force veterans, Bradley and Paul (last names withheld) were in attendance at the tournament. Paul served from 1988-1992, and Bradley served from 1988-1994.
“Whenever we can give back to the community and the guys that gave so much [in service] it’s a no brainer,” Bradley said. “ It helps to keep in mind […] the sacrifice that our people make, that we as a country, we all benefit from these sacrifices. And it just kind of keeps it top of mind in the public that there are people out there willing to give the ultimate sacrifice to defend what we as Americans get to be a part of.”
Kappa Sigma vice president and mechanical engineering student Fox Martin, helped plan the golf tournament. He joined Kappa Sigma for its focus on philanthropy and community service.
“We found out they focus on fundraising and helping the community, and it connected with me,” Martin said. “We’re raising money for our Military Heroes Campaign, which funds wheelchair-accessible homes for veterans through organizations like Homes For Our Troops. We want to get our name out into the community and then raise money for that organization, just because they do so much good.”
The fraternity ended up raising over $14,000. It marks the first charity tournament they’ve hosted.
