Homecoming is a time where friends, family, and alumni come together and celebrate a week’s worth of activities; and Colorado Mesa University [CMU] was anything but short of it.
To kick things off, free T-shirts were given out on Oct. 14th. On Oct. 15th, Cultural Inclusion Council collaborated with Programming Activities Council (PAC) to throw a grocery bingo night where the students received prizes such as conchas goodie gift baskets from the Latino Student Association (LSA), make up kits from Gender and Sexualities Alliance (GSA), grocery essentials and more.
That following day on Oct. 16th, The Criterion hosted a trivia night, where the grand prize of the night was a Nintendo Switch from a giveaway. That same night PAC hosted a screening of the movie Scream.
Next on the chopping block was saloon night with PAC & Sustainability Council. They gave out free food, snacks and drinks to everyone who stopped by.
Two of the biggest events students look forward to are the bonfire and the CMU homecoming football game. Homecoming events are a way to build campus community.
“It’s the way to build community, you know, connect with people who you haven’t […] met with yet, that you might have some […] similarities with. Get you outside of your room,” said senior Parker Harris.
Harris enjoyed all that homecoming shad to offer this year..
“From what I saw when I went around and checked out the festivities […] I thought it was pretty cool,” said Harris.
Homecoming is also a time for Mavs to showcase their school spirit.
“Honestly school spirit is a thing that that CMU tends to lack, but […] this school and this campus is the best part of Grand Junction […] I went to the soccer game earlier today, and I went and got a T-shirt earlier. I’ve been to a couple of the events just throughout the week […] They had a little donut day,” international business senior Spencer Holmes said.
With the clock ticking down for many seniors students, this is their last chance to relish in the joy of homecoming.
“It’s just a fun way to get out and […] do things around the school. For me, it’s my last year, so I’m trying to do everything I can […] I did grocery bingo, I did trivia, I went to the carnival, and now I’m gonna go to the bonfire,” said senior marketing major Brittani Sandoval.
The Mavericks rallied at the homecoming football game and cheered the team to victory against New Mexico Highlands University, 21-20.
