The Mavericks hosted Western Colorado University (WCU) and were able to walk away with a big win.
Two pins by redshirt sophomore Erik Contreras and redshirt freshman Ryan Wheeler highlighted the dual for Colorado Mesa University (CMU). Cole Mortenson for the mountaineers was seconds away from being in a takedown and found the strength for the pin. It only took Wheeler 1:11 to get the points for CMU.
Contreras did not need the whole time as he was able to pin down Dean Noble and get the fall at 3:45.
Redshirt freshman Dawson Collins started things off for the Mavericks as he was able to squeak out the win against Cody Ftazinger in his first home match as a Maverick.
The first three on the mat for the Mavericks set the tone before Wheeler stepped onto the mat.
The momentum carried throughout the night, even though freshman Alex Holguin lost his match he was able to fight until the end as he only lost 6-4 after getting one takedown and escaping twice.
Seth Lathem solidified the win for the Mavericks even though Nolan Krone, Donnie Negus and Gabe Carranza all won their matches. Negus put up 16 points to his opponent Porter Fox’s five. Krone did not let Cole Gray get a point as he won his match 15-0 in just under six minutes.
Krone had three takedowns of his own.
The Mavericks pulled out a 33-6 win over the Mountaineers in their first home dual of the season. CMU will compete again on Dec.18 at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind.
