The men’s soccer team continued to dominate at home as they won against both Fort Lewis College (FLC) and Adams State University (ASU).
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) looked for revenge against the Skyhawks and got it as they got the win in overtime.
Redshirt freshman forward Joey Joiner came into the game in the second half and had a very big impact as he scored both of the Mavericks goals. Joiner’s first goal came around the 63 minute as he found a pass from redshirt sophomore forward Alec Fronapfel.
The goal tied the game as the Mavericks had to come from behind. A goal from Tomas Duenes Gonzalez four minutes into the second half of the game prompted a come from behind win from CMU.
Redshirt freshman and redshirt senior midfielder Leo Mireles and Aaron Martinez were able to complete the final run of the game as they found Joiner eight minutes into overtime.
Both teams took many shots as FLC took 18 shots with four of them on goal. While CMU was more aggressive with getting the ball towards the net as 10 of their 26 shots were made in the goal.
On Sunday afternoon, the Mavericks looked to be undefeated in conference play and did just that when the Mavericks took a 9-0 victory over ASU. Eight different Mavericks scored as redshirt junior forward Ross Elliott was able to pick up two goals in the win.
CMU put the pressure on early as they took early possession and never really gave it up. Redshirt freshman midfielder David Peters found the goal 14 minutes into the net. The goal was scored off of a corner kick by redshirt senior midfielder Gabriel Peres.
Later in the game, CMU capitalized in possession when the Grizzlies goalie stepped out of the goalie box and gave the ball to the opposition.
Redshirt junior midfielder/defender Jannick Lange made the second goal of the game for the Mavericks off a pass from Mireles. He also had another assist later on in the game when Elliott scored his first goal at the 50 minute mark. Elliott also scored in the 89 minute of the game.
Prior to Elliot scoring the fourth goal of the game, Fernando Morales found a pass from the redshirt junior and scored as well.
Freshman forward Josiah Henderson, redshirt junior midfielder Tristan Widic and redshirt freshman forward Berkley Fuller IV all scored in the Mavericks victory.
