The Mavericks took their fifth straight win of the season with a dominant 5-0 victory over Regis University (RU).
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) withheld a season high this game making three of five goals within the first half.
This was the Mavericks last regular game before the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) tournament.
“We were just excited to play. Every game is a blessing. We told the guys we take everything one game at a time, so this is just another game on the routes to the goals that we set,” Head Coach Jon Fridal said.
Within the first 32 seconds, senior midfielder Ramses Atahualpa took a shot at the goal and scored the Mavericks first point of the game. The pace was then set for the rest of the game.
At 13:20 sophomore forward Alec Fronapfel added to the score making it 2-0. This was one of two goals that Fronapfel scored for the Mavericks. He scored his second goal at 59:50 with an assist from Atahualpa.
“He is relentless. He doesn’t stop working. He had a good reward for it tonight,” Fridal said.
CMU was prepared on the defensive end. They were watching for easy steals and communicating throughout the game. RU took multiple shots at the net but was not successful.
Freshman midfielder John Roberts added a third point to the scoreboard during the second half. This was his first goal of the season. A goal that the team was quick to celebrate.
The Mavericks maintained strong control of the ball. They made accurate and fast passes to each other allowing for good movement through the field.
Senior midfielder Gabriel Peres scored the final goal for CMU. He closed out the game with a score of 5-0.
CMU will now compete in the RMAC tournament this upcoming week. After getting a win and sharing the conference title with Colorado School of Mines, the Mavericks will host the semifinal and final portions of the tournament.
They also earned a bye going into the tournament and will start tournament play on April 23 in Grand Junction, Colo.
