Update Monday 1:09 p.m: The homicide victim has been identified as CMU student Jared Martinez, 22.
Just past midnight Friday night, the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center received several 911 calls about shots being fired at a house across from Midtown Apartments, according to the Grand Junction Police Department.
One adult victim died at the scene, while three more were sent to the hospital. The victims have not yet been identified, and the suspects are unknown.
According to the police report, one person was detained and taken to the police department for an interview.
“The house across the street from us has parties a lot,” Colorado Mesa University (CMU) student and former Midtown Apartments resident Leo Morkus said. “Friday and Saturday nights a lot of people hang out, a lot of them college students. It was a little past midnight and we heard seven loud pops from our bedroom followed by screaming, then another pop after a moment. We looked out our window and saw a vehicle driving off and some people.”
It was her final night in the apartment before she was scheduled to move to a new residence.
Police responded to the scene within minutes.
“My boyfriend pulled up his police scanner app and heard them talking about suspects being detained, others in a vehicle being tracked down. One person was shot in the chest, one had a bullet graze in the leg, another had a bullet ricochet and one other was injured. We could see them pull out one other person and try to resuscitate them. One other passed out but only one was severely hurt,” Morkus said.
CMU put out a short email statement shortly after the shooting occurred offering counseling help.
Anyone with information, including security camera footage, is asked to call non-emergency dispatch at 970-242-6707.

Thank you Parker, we sympathize with your comment on the contents of this article. Regarding the details and lack of interviews in this article, it was written before all the details had come to light. At the time it was written, very few details were known and the only person available for an interview was one of the neighbors who brought some information to light. As information has been released and more accurate information is available, we have released an updated article on the issue.
