Foster laments on student payroll

CMU President Tim Foster acknowledged a need to assess and possibly revise changes made to student payroll protocols before this academic year.

The changes, which stipulated that all student fee-funded positions not be paid by a stipend and be paid on an hourly basis instead, were implemented as many student life employees returned to work in August.

“I think we’ll go back and revisit those and say, ‘All right, let’s go back to that old system,’” Foster said last Monday.

Foster noted that the changes complicated things for student-paid positions like those at Horizon Magazine, which were not funded under the pretense of an hourly pay system.

“We think we can go back and say, ‘Okay, we will give you a scholarship stipend for those kind of activities,’” Foster said, including that the responsibilities entailed in some student positions are difficult to measure on an hourly basis. “I think we’ll un-hijack that concept and really take that back and come up with a better solution.”
