The CMU Athletic Training Club held its third annual Mr. Mav male athlete pageant April 7 in Brownson Arena. Attendees had the option of paying $2 for admission or contributing two non-perishable canned goods, all of which will be donated to the local food bank.

Fourteen male athletes participated in the event from several sports, including wrestling, track and field, football and cross country.

The event started with an introduction of the judges; Naomi Brown, a certified athletic trainer, Shannon Hattervig, certified athletic trainer and Clinical Coordinator for the Athletic Training Program; Karli Knudsen, women’s basketball assistant coach; and Katrice Thomas, women’s track and field coach.

The Mr. Mav Pageant was the Athletic Training Club’s main fundraiser to send club members to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Training Conference, which was held April 10-13 in Provo, Utah. The club sent 13 students to the conference.

“The conference is important because it gives our students an opportunity to listen to many other professors, athletic trainers and researchers and learn about important topics that will benefit them as athletic trainers,” President Alli Zeigel of the Athletic Training Club said. “It also gives the students the opportunity to expand their networks by meeting other athletic trainers for employment opportunities and possibly furthering their education.”

The pageant had three parts, the first being a “pick-up line” segment where contestants gave their best lines to Lauren Brouse, a senior on the women’s soccer team.

Some contestants played it safe with classic, albeit corny, pick-up lines, such as, “My parents taught me how to treat a beautiful girl, but they never taught me how to treat an angel,” and “Do you have a band-aid? Because I hurt my knee falling for you.”

Others went for a no-holds-barred approach, going so far as to say, “I’m not Asian, but I’ll still eat your cat,” and “They call me the firefighter, ‘cause I know how to turn on the ‘hoes.’”

Some were down right gross: “My love for you is like diarrhea. I just can’t keep it in.”

Afterwards, participants stripped down for a bathing suit competition, followed by the talent portion of the event. Talents ranged from playing guitar and singing to chugging a gallon of milk. William Grandall performed a Turkish get-up with a twist, using a girl as the weight rather than a kettlebell.

Jon Johannsen, a cross country athlete, won third place while Roy Abergil, an international student from Israel and part of the men’s soccer team, placed second. First place went to wrestler Bruno Nicoletti. Mr. Congeniality went to Ryan Reasoner of the track and field team.

“I didn’t really care about winning,” Nicoletti said. “It was fun just being goofy. I just winged it.”

Mr. Mav was the Athletic Training Club’s last event of the semester, but students can look forward to another pageant next spring.
