Greek life interest group hopes to finalize sorority

CMU’s Sorority Interest group is close to finalizing its effort to bring sorority Greek life to campus. The club’s members are currently picking national sororities to bring to campus next fall to start the recruitment process.

Director of Student Life Mitch Karstens, an advisor for the current Sorority Interest Group, said, “It’s kind of a lengthy process to bring the sorority on campus. We had to send the bid letter to the national sorority council.”

The current club, which has 80 to 90 members, is working with the alumni chapter of sorority life in the area on becoming national sorority. Although the current focus of the club is becoming a national sorority, the club does a lot both on and off campus.

“Their mission is to build a strong community of women, form strong relationship bonds, do philanthropy, give back to the community, and focus on stronger education,” Karstens said.

In addition, the club’s members do a lot of volunteering, such as working in soup kitchens and raising awareness for breast cancer. As of now, any CMU female student can join the club, though in the future, there might be additional requirements. Once the club becomes a national sorority, it will transition from the school’s constitution to the national sorority constitution.

According to Karstens, “Sororities are a little different than fraternities. Their processes are different. Unlike fraternities, sororities are governed by the National Panel and Council, which is an international association of sorority [life].”

Despite their differences, Karstens hopes for a future collaboration on different projects.

“Sorority life coming to campus is great,” Cameron Edwards, a history major and a president of Kappa Sigma fraternity said. “I would love to have Kappa Sigma and other Greek organizations do fundraising and philanthropy for the school and community at large.”
