The track and field team traded in their running shoes for high heels Wednesday night, as Brownson Arena was turned into a “premiere entertainment and shopping event” for the CMU Athletic Scholarship Foundation.

The first ever Dash N2 Fashion event included vendors such as Yoga Vinyasa, the CMU Bookstore and It Works/Skinny Wrap, all of which lined the left side of the arena, while the right side was turned into a fashion runway. Doors opened at 6 p.m., allowing fashion seekers a chance to shop around the marketplace, buy raffle tickets and pick the perfect seat.

The first 100 people through the door also received a free Maverick Worn With Pride T-shirt. After some technical difficulties with sound were overcome, the lights dimmed and the models hit the runway.

Not only were the women from the track team strutting the stage, several men from the team joined them, as well as some young ladies from local Pretty in Pink Pageants.

Katrice Thomas, Head Women’s Track and Field Coach doesn’t mind taking some of the credit for the event.

“This was kind of my idea, she said. “I’m a little of a shop-a-holic, and by a little I mean a lot. I just wanted to do something fun. Fundraising is something that all programs do but I wanted to do something that was entertaining and creative for the people here and so you get a chance to see our teams personality.”

The show included several mini runway events. The first brought out the models in all black.

“It was a way of forming a blank slate, “according to track team freshman, Allie Suppes, who also said her only strategy for modeling in the show was not to fall on her face.

The next event included accessories from Rue 21 and a performance by local rapper Reazon. The line, “spring, clothes, models, fashion. Colorado Mesa University, what’s happening?” could be heard echoing throughout the arena.

Next came the outfits from Charlotte Russe and then a special Rock the Runway contest in which several men competed against the ladies to see who could strut their stuff the best. At the end, the audience was asked to judge using clapping and screams, and it was decided that the ladies worked it best.

In the final runway show, clothes from Yoga Vinyasa and prom dresses took the stage.

“The track team approached me to be apart of the show,” Tess Canterbury, owner of heated power yoga studio commented before the show. “I think it’s going to be really fun. I’m excited to see some of the girls in the active wear as well as to show the active wear off to the students here and anybody that comes. I think it’ll be really cool.”

Watching Canterbury’s face light up during the final walk around the runway proved she was not let down.

At the end of what proved to be a successful night, a large raffle took place, promising the winner hot air balloon ride. Kennedy Kinkade was the lucky winner.

“I think we raised about $800 dollars tonight and the money will be going to the CMU Athletic Scholarship Foundation, Thomas said at the end of the night. “It’s going to help all these lovely student athletes in track and field continue their education. We are definitely going to do it again. We have a lot of ideas for the next one.”
