Davis excels beyond tennis

Kaylee Davis has a bright future ahead of her, but that’s not to say her past isn’t beaming as well.

After being recognized as CMU’s Athlete of the Year in 2013, the senior from Abilene, Texas, is playing out her final year while preparing for medical school.

“I didn’t get the best record that year, so it felt really good that the school still recognized me,” Davis said. “I’m pretty sure a teacher and a friend nominated me, so they knew how hard I was working. It was so great. I felt very loved and blessed.”

Davis transferred from Tyler Junior College in Texas after her freshman year, where her team won the National Junior College title before she accepted a full tennis scholarship and made the switch to CMU her sophomore year.

“I was like, I’m ready to get to a university and make a family with friends that I know are gonna be going with me through this whole college thing,” Davis said.

Since starting at CMU, Davis has gotten the opportunity to travel with the women’s tennis team to Utah, Arizona, California, Oregon, Wyoming, South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Nevada, as well as Kentucky for Nationals her first year here.

“It was the funnest experience ever,” Davis said. “I’ve been so many different places with tennis.”

Davis admitted that if she had to play another sport besides tennis, her first choice would be gymnastics.

“I would stink,” Davis said. “It would be really fun though. It’s more of an individual sport, just like tennis is. Tennis is individual, but it’s team, and I like that. I feel like I’d feel kind of lost and not as important in volleyball or basketball. I like the ball coming to me every single time. No one else is gonna touch that ball but me.”

As a biology major and chemistry minor, Davis is currently participating in an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course to work as an ambulance technician in the year between graduating in May and going to medical school. Although she has taken the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) once before, Davis plans on giving it another shot right after graduation to get an even higher score and boost her chances of getting into a good medical school somewhere in Texas.

“I like to take things one step at a time,” she said. “I feel more accomplished, and it’s more rewarding to just go step by step.”

Although med school is in her future, Davis is not exactly sure which medical route she’ll be taking in the long run. Some of her options include becoming a doctor of obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) or, if she could live her dream, a dermatologist.

Davis has accepted that “there’s probably not a lot of time to play [tennis] in med school,” but she doesn’t plan on completely giving up the sport she’s been playing since she was five.

“I want to be a really good old lady on a women’s league one day,” she said. “I want to be an old lady baller.”

With two wins for the CMU women’s tennis team last weekend, Davis is confident that she and her teammates can look forward to a successful season.

“I’m kind of getting pumped,” she said. “I think this is going to be a really good year.”

CMU beat Southwest Minnesota State 9-0 and Schriener 8-1 in Arizona and won all six singles matches in straight sets against Southwest.
