Junktown Critic: Downtown drag show flips the script on the Oscars

Downtown Grand Junction holds a plethora of experiences to be had. But if you are looking for something different, something you may not expect, Sabrosa is the place to be.

Places in which you can experience something outside your comfort zone and still have a good time are few and far between. Nothing showcases Sabrosa’s open atmosphere like the Drag Me to the Movies event. The name may seem a bit deceiving at first. As soon as you walk through the doors, however, you know you are at a drag show.

It can be an intimidating experience for anyone not aware of the event being held, yet it does not detract from the experience.

Performances that leave you singing and dancing to the beat and the overall good times for anyone that is open to just that—this is what the Drag Me to the Movies event is made of. Dancing, conversations and enjoyable people is all you will get at a show like this.

All the performers wanted to involve the crowd, urging them to join in and ensuring that everyone was having a good time. Dancing dominated as the act of choice for most of the night’s performers, supported by music ranging from hip hop and rock to even show tunes. Seeing someone that is over six feet tall bust a move in a skin-tight dress and four-inch heels is quite astonishing.

The best performers each opted for personal ways of expressing themselves, picking songs that told a story about themselves and how they are empowered, embrace their lifestyle and encourage others to feel the same way. The hostesses even gave a bit of comedic relief to the night with some stories that only a queen could make into a joke.

For someone that has never been to a drag show before, it was definitely something worth checking out. Yes, there was some initial intimidation surrounding the event, being in a room full of men dressed as women and women dressed as men, but there was no real need to ever feel worried as no one was looking to single anyone out for being different. In fact, everyone being a little different seem to help deter some of the general bar stereotypes from attending, keeping the closed-minded from even having a chance to ruin anyone’s night.

Giving those that are considered different a night to express themselves with no fear of being judged is a positive reason for attending a drag show, making it something everyone should experience.
