ASG Update: Elections ahead

As the quarter has settled, so have the ASG’s weekly meetings.

This week only two new bills were passed. The first, 13-57, was requested on behalf of the Society for Human Resource Management Club and asked for $1,099 from the SCRF to go to the SHRM Regional Conference in Scottsdale, Ariz., over spring break. Along with close to $3,000 of contribution from the club and its members, the competition has the teams from each school deliberate case studies relevant to human resource problems and create a presentation based on their decision. With little discussion and disagreement, the bill passed.

Next on the docket was ASG 13-58, originating from the ASG cabinet: $227.06 was requested from the operating budget to purchase stickers for promotion of upcoming elections and to promote the ASG Facebook page. Some senators expressed concerns over the stickers, whether $3,000 was too much or why students would want them. While specifics of the design were not set, the bill passed 19-5.

Senators were urged to spread word about the ASG Facebook page. Director of Communications Matt Scofield stressed that if students want to know what is going on in ASG, liking the page is one of the best ways to do so.

CMU has been selected as one of five schools in the nation to hear presentations to expand Greek Life on campus. The school will sit down with sorority heads at the National Expansion Bulletin and decide which sorority fits CMU life best.

Other small news discussed included coffee with this year’s presidential candidates during Mav Fest on April 9 as well as debates the following day.

Student Life will be posting avaliable club positions at the front desk of Student Life this week, and in upcoming weeks, ASG will make a decision on whom will perform at the fall concert.

While John Marshall won’t have his normal town hall meeting next month, the entire Sodexo staff will hold one April 2 from 4-6 p.m.

Finally, the third and final readings of two amendments made to the bylaws concerning appointment and re-appointment process of the FAC chair and appeal process for clubs to receive funds were passed unanimously.
