Snow Slay shreds Crested Butte amid 20″ snowfall

High up on Crested Butte Mountain Resort last weekend, members of CMU’s Snow Slay club got the heebee-geebees.

Buried under 20 inches of weekend snow, the crew stared down a massive boulder with a steep approach, blind drop and an even steeper landing.

“You can’t see the landing,” Jake Teneyck, junior geology major of Elizabeth, Colo., said. “That’s what gives you the  heebee-geebees.”

Despite the mountain feature’s intimidating size, the skiers and boarders conquered it one by one.

“You see your friends hitting it,” Teneyck said. “You can’t say no.”

Dubbed the Heebee-Geebee Gap, it was just one part of what by all accounts seemed to be a miraculous weekend for CMU skiers and boarders.

For $125 per person, Snow Slay Club members, as part of a “Weekend Shredaway,” got a two-day pass to Crested Butte and a two-night stay in the resort’s Grand Lodge. The massive snowfall was just a generous layer of icing on a mountainous cake.

Eric Almanzar, freshman business administration major of Denver and Snow Slay volunteer, said that the trip has been the highlight of his season so far.

“This year has been over the top,” he said. “Crested Butte feels like the apex.”

Snow Slay’s next Weekend Shredaway is planned for March 29-30 at Silverton Mountain. Fifteen spots will be available, but prices and accommodations have not been confirmed yet.
