Beck remains quietly eclectic on new LP

Over the past two decades, Beck has modified the way he approaches music. In the ‘90s, he went from having an edgy electronic style with hip-hop influences to a style more remniscent of oldschool funk by way of indie rock.

Beck’s old stuff was the kind of music you used to shout your heart out to and jump around and act crazy because of how fun it was. On “Morning Phase,” Beck slows it down significantly, yet he still manages to keep some of those uplifting tempos.

Incorporating psychedelic, funk, folk and some of his old rocker tones, the songs on “Morning Phase” are cheerful and calming. Using different kinds of imagery and personification throughout his lyrics, the music sets the mood in almost any room, creating a communal vibe of belonging and acceptance.

Although his music has changed, his voice has not. It’s still the groggy, monotone voice comparable to that of a veteran college professor. His voice complements the eclectic range of instruments used throughout the album, which include strings, banjos, synth and drums along with his signature acoustic guitar. A particular pleasure of repeated listens is how these various instruments start to the reveal themselves.

Three songs stand out as my absolute favorites. “Say Goodbye” is one of those songs where the uptempo rhythm sets it apart, rocking on the strength of its folk-blues feel. The lyrics in “Blue Moon” are deeply affecting, dealing with themes that are especially relatable when you’re lonely. “Blackbird Chain” is a slower jam than the rest, comfortably nostalgic in the way it resembles a slow song from a high school dance.

Beck definitely knows how to make these sounds come together to make a phenomenal record. “Morning Phase” makes you feel like you’re in a better place, somewhere you can relax and forget about all of your problems. It’s an album you’ll want to listen to when you’ve had a long day and want to take a trip.
