Remembrance Day ahead, ASG makes ceremony preparations

Weeks after the loss of a student, CMU is preparing to honor deceased Mavericks at Remembrance Day from 2-4 p.m. on March 13.

ASG Director of Finance Bonnie Masters will speak at the ceremony and said that Remembrance Day is intended to remember all students and alumni who have been lost.

“It’s not just for Gretchen [Carrow],” Masters said, referring to a CMU student who passed away recently. “Not only is she important, but everyone else is as well.”

President Tim Foster will also speak at the ceremony.

“We lose students in the course of every year,” Foster said. “What’s interesting is how many families come back for the opportunity to reminisce about their loved ones.”

Foster said that although the ceremony can be difficult, it’s important to celebrate the life of deceased students.

“I always go back and look at the list [of deceased students], and each and every one of them is its own sad story,” Foster said. “You also have to celebrate what good people they were. You get those images back in your mind, and you smile.”

ASG Director of External Affairs Chelsea Chiovitti, who is helping to plan the ceremony, said it will include a presentation with music and conclude with a balloon release.
