PAC Pub Night attracts students to Naggy McGee’s

Student superheroes took a break from fighting crime to enjoy brews, local music and prize drawings at Naggy McGee’s last Thursday at PAC’s second superhero- themed pub night.

According to Julia Kerrigan, a junior PAC member, pub night is a new series designed to highlight local drinking establishments for students. PAC launched the series in January at the Ale House, where students came dressed in retro-ski attire.

Kerrigan estimated that well over 200 students attended the first outing with close to 150 joining last Thursday.

We have been extremely happy with the turnout,” Tess Matsukawa, PAC chair, said. “This is really what students want, and they’ve shown it by attending.”

Pub night was inspired by similar events on other campuses with the aim of engaging upper classmen in safe student community-based events.

“We’ve seen it from other campuses, and it was an idea that we came up with collectively,” Matsukawa said. “We really wanted to reach out to upper classmen because I feel like that’s something we’ve neglected over the past couple of years.”

Even thought pub nights are aimed at reaching out to students over the age of 21, Kerrigan stressed the importance of making sure bars allowed entrance for 18 and up as well.

“I really feel like it gives student a safe option to engage in an environment where they can be with all their friends and win cool prizes,” Matsukawa said.

So far PAC has had great success in reaching out to local bars, noting a 90% approval rating among managers. Sean Lange, restaurant manager at Naggy McGee’s, was particularly excited about the opportunity to reach out to CMU students.

“We love getting people down from that side of town,” Lange said. “This is a good, regulated way to get people safely here and safely home, and it gives people that aren’t 21 a chance to come in the pub and look around the bar.”

Even though pub night occurs on a Thursday night, MavRides is available to students seeking a ride to and from the establishment where PAC is hosting the event.

“I know PAC has MavRides, but there’s definitely a little bit of concern because students might not know they’re out on a Thursday,” junior Tyler Gomez said. “But most kids seem to keep more safe than not.”

PAC received donations from SkyDive Moab and purchased a variety of superhero movies to distribute as prizes throughout the night. Overall, the event gained widespread approval among attendees.

“I like the idea that as a student body we can come together and drink in a safe environment,” sophomore Delaney Harper said.

The costume theme also attracted more secretive students who otherwise may have been confined to their dormitory or bat cave.

“It’s nice to be able to hang out with other superheroe’s and not have to worry about your identify being exposed,” sophomore Batman said.

PAC will continue its pub night series March 20 with a 90s throwback at Lauree’s.
