ASG update: Senate confronts SCRF balance, saves $25,000

The ASG senate reached a resolution on the state SCRF at last Wednesday’s meeting. The SCRF fund was dipping to a noticeable low, and the Fee Allocation Committee took measures to ensure an active ASG for next year.

“We want to give ASG the best chance to maintain functionality for next year,” FAC Chair Zach Beach said. “We wanted to have $90-100,000 available to do that.”

That figure is coupled with the $67,000 estimated to deposit in SCRF next year and whatever is available to roll over from this year. FAC made the decision to not spend the $30,000 reserve, leaving a little over $5,000 left for the remainder of spring.

ASG has the power to overturn this decision if two-thirds of senators disagree. However, senators were worried about $5,000 being enough to last through the spring. By way of 19-2 vote, they decided to roll over $25,000, leaving $10,000 left for spring. If any of the funds aren’t used, they can be added to what is rolled over.

The CMU Nordic Ski Team has earned a spot in nationals, hosted at Olympic holy ground, Lake Placid, N.Y. In ASG 13-43, the team asked for $5,695 from RNCF to help along with their $15,200 team contribution that included $200 from each of the five qualified skiers. They are optimistic for the chances as the women’s team placed third last year, and the bill was passed, 21-0.

ASG 13-44 through 13-48 were all amendments to the wording of bylaws, with small additions as well. The changes are necessary and related to the upcoming Biennial Budget process, according to President Ariel Diamond.

Clubs must now send their final budgets to the director of Student Life as well, instead of just the budget director. Clubs must also choose a representative to meet with the vice president of ASG within the first two weeks of the semester.

The new Maverick Board was created to help groups become more specialized. The new Board takes on Little Mavs, the Outdoor Program, Monfort Family Human Performance Lab and Athletic Club Trainer from the ever-growing Campbell board.

There are now criteria clubs can follow to become an organization, although they do not guarantee a status change. Clubs must be active for three years as well as show consistent activity. Consistent activity can be regular attendance at club general assembly meetings, fundraising, establishing presence on campus – including student interest – competing against similar clubs, and following CMU policies.

All of the amendments were passed unanimously.
