Softball struggles at West Texas Invitational

With Valentines Day on Friday, last weekend was all about spreading the love, but CMU’s softball team and their opponents didn’t get the memo. The Mavericks, preseason RMAC favorites, lost four in a row this weekend to open the season.

The softball team traveled to Texas to face some tough competition at the Woodward West Texas A&M Invitational on Friday. Angelo State and Tarleton State easily defeated the Mavericks 10-0 and 7-0.

CMU struggled offensively, recording just two hits in each game and suffered pitching woes. Courtney Shreves and Ashley Pulido gave up 17 combined runs in the two games.

The Mavericks suffered two more losses on Saturday, capped off with a 12-7 extra-inning loss to Eastern New Mexico.

Makayla Kovac finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Jessica Severinsen threw all eight innings with four strikeouts.

After an 8-0 loss to No. 8 West Texas, Sunday looked a little better for the Mavericks as they recorded their first win of the season, beating Texas A&M University-Kingsville 4-0.

CMU will play its first home games at Bergman Field on Saturday and Sunday against Metropolitan State University of Denver.
