Sun Kil Moon burns slow on new album

Sun Kil Moon’s singer Mark Kozelek’s voice is raspy and dry, the kind where you’re unsure whether you like it or not, but if you’re looking for a good story, then check out their new album “Benji.”

This album to comes together from several disparate elements. It plays like indie that meets alternative that meets folk, featuring a mix of many different types of instruments like the acoustic guitar, some piano, some tambourine, a little bit of drums, and even some trumpets.

Beware that these songs are long, and I mean six to ten minutes long. Kozelek’s lyrics are also a little different from what you hear on the radio. The songs are deeply personal, incorporating stories from his life about love and equality, death, being hit by his father and later making up with him. These songs are not radio-friendly, and they’re refreshing because of it.

It’s such a deep and sometimes twisted album that some people might end up crying sooner or later. “Benji” is a great piece of work, so give it a listen.
