The Delta Quad was full Friday Feb. 14 as students from all sections of the First Year Engineering Project course competed against one another in groups, using catapults and trebuchets of their own creation to launch tennis balls at a wooden castle.

Each team, consisting of three to four members, was responsible for building its own catapult or trebuchet out of recylced materials and wood.

Instructors Frank Kustas, Ruth Powell and Scott Kessler stipulated that the contraptions cost less than $25 to build and fit inside a standard locker.

Teams scored points based on whether they were able to sling a ball into the castle for 10 points or at least strike the front of it for five points.

“The big thing is to work as a team, an engineering team,” Kustas said.
