North Avenue wreck leaves truck embedded in Smoke Shop Etc.

truck wreck 5

Much like a wrecking ball, a blue pickup truck barreled through the front wall of Smoke Shop Etc, 1059 North Avenue at about 1 p.m. Thursday.

The truck, driven by a woman heading southbound from a campus parking on the north side of North Avenue, collided with a green minivan and was propelled into the storefront, according the Grand Junction Police Department Public Information Coordinator Kate Porras.

Porras said that the driver of the minivan suffered “minor” injuries and that the driver of the truck was cited for failing to yield.

Tony Demorest, who works at Smoke Shop Etc, was inside the store when the accident happened. He heard the initial collision, then looked up.

“The truck kept rolling this way,” he said. “She [the driver] jumped out and the tires were still spinning on it.”

Demorest said that he and two customers were the only people in the store. All three were near the back of the store, out of the way of the collision.

Porras said that the accident occurred when the woman driving the pickup truck was attempting to make a turn onto eastbound North Avenue and was waved through by a driver in the backed up westbound lane. The van struck the pickup as it turned across North Avenue.
