Students pay premium price for many Sodexo products

Sodexo is the main food supplier for Colorado Mesa University, feeding over 2,000 students living on campus as well as other students and visitors that may make a stop by the Bookcliff Cafe. All this makes for a pretty big operation, but walking through the chest-high aisles, one thing stands out: prices.

“For the most part, I think they are way out of scale,” student Kristyn Wykert said. “It makes me shop there less.”

When compared to an in-town grocer like Wal-Mart, most packaged products are more expensive. Sodexo’s prices on snacks, fruits and non-perishables are considerably higher.

“Wal-Mart is in a completely different market than us, and when you go look at prices from gas stations and convenience stores, our prices are in line with them,” Sodexo Retail Manager Zita Bratt said.

Some of the biggest differences include the cost of a single packet of Emergen-C, which is three cents at Wal-Mart and $1.85 at the Bookcliff Cafe, while Pringles, Pop-Tarts and Easy Mac are twice the price of their Wal-Mart counterparts. Meanwhile, candy and soda prices have less of a variance than the costs of medicine, supplements and gum.
