CMU swimming hits its stride for RMAC play

The hard work from CMU’s men’s and women’s swimming teams seems to be paying off so far this season.

“We’ve won pretty much every single meet we’ve gone to so far this year, so I think that’s pretty good,” junior Peter Szekely said.

The women’s team narrowly defeated Colorado Mines 112-110 early this month before coming back last week to defeat them 155-73. They couldn’t hold on in the double dual and fell to Northern Colorado 129-99, but beat Western State 132-86 the next day.

Miranda Reetz and Briana Purkapile have been dominating for CMU all month. Reetz got two wins in the first match against Colorado Mines, won two more events during their double dual and won the 400 individual medley against Western State. Purkapile won the 1,000 free against Mines, the 200 free in their double dual and the 200 fly against Western State.

The men’s team has also seen success this month. They won nine events at the beginning of the month in a double dual against Adams State and Wayland Baptist before defeating Colorado Mines 124-107 the next day. They were led by Brock Martin, who swept both diving events and Thomas Stutzriem, who won the 200 breastroke with the fifth fastest time in school history.

“I think we have a pretty good shot at doing well at RMAC and winning it,” Szekely said. “So I think at this point in the season everyone’s doing great.”

The CMU Invitational is December 5-7 and with be held in the El Pomar Natatorium.
