Student Life creates alternative spring break

Students unsure of plans for spring break now have the opportunity to participate in one of Student Life’s upcoming Alternative Spring Break trips during March 22 – 30, 2014.

“A lot of larger institutions have some kind of alternative spring break where students can go and do public service,” said Mackenzie Eikamp, student life special projects coordinator and trip leader. It’s an opportunity for people to give back and still have a fun, unforgettable spring break.”

The trips will be to New Orleans, Louisiana and throughout the state of Colorado. Student Life coordinators are partnering with the St. Bernard Project, a non-profit organization based in New Orleans. On the trip, students will focus on disaster recovery by painting, cleaning and helping to rebuild new homes.

The Colorado Tour will include projects that help communities throughout the state. Because details of this trip are not finalized, students interested in exploring Colorado and making a difference will have a say in the planning process.

Student Life is working on acquiring sponsorships for each trip as well as fundraising. The approximate cost for the New Orleans trip is $450–$600 per person and the Colorado Tour is estimated at $350–$500 per person. These costs include housing, food, transportation and airfare.

Those interested in participating in Alternative Spring Break can email cmuspringbreak@gmail.com or stop by the Student Life Offices for an application, which will be due Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. along with a $50 deposit.
