Student Life prepares first CMU Hunger Games

CMU’s Programming Activities Council (PAC) will be hosting a “Hunger Games Week” starting on Monday, Nov. 18, leading up to the pre-premier of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” on Thursday, Nov. 21.

Students will have the opportunity to form teams of six to eight people to sign up as “tributes” for their respective Student Life organizations. Throughout the week, there will be several competitions with chances to earn points. The tribute team with the most amount of points at the end of the week will receive free drinks, popcorn and candy as well as reserved seating in the early showing of “Catching Fire.”

Monday’s event is the Capital Dinner Party from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the University Center dining hall. Tribute teams will be able to earn points by competing in the eating competition starting at 6:30 p.m.

“They’re going to have to eat the nightlock berry that’s in ‘The Hunger Games,’” Tess Matsukawa, PAC chair, said. “They have to eat the pie with their hands behind their back.”

PAC is also hosting another grocery bingo event after the dinner party in the Bookcliff Café at 8 p.m.

On Tuesday, tribute teams, as well as any student or member of the community, can donate food at the Hunger Run competition from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the UC Ballroom. This day-long event will be followed by a movie showing of “The Hunger Games” at 8:15 p.m., also in the UC Ballroom. There, PAC will announce who won the Hunger Run competition.

Wednesday is the dodge ball tournament, held at 5 p.m. in the Maverick Pavilion. Tribute teams may compete to add to their total points for the week, and other teams of six to eight can participate as well.

“I’m excited for all of [the events],” Erin Scherb, PAC member, said. “My event is the Hunger Run. It’s great that we can get the community involved, and it’s for a really good cause.”

The most anticipated event of the week, the pre-premier of “Catching Fire,” is at 9 p.m. at Regal Cinemas. Students can purchase a discounted ticket for $7, and for every five cans of food donated they will receive $1 off of the ticket price. These discounted tickets are only available for CMU students with presentation of a MavCard or their student ID number at the UC Information Desk.
