Women interested in ice hockey have gathered to start a women’s hockey team at CMU. A group of nine girls and Matt Meiring, the men’s hockey coach, met last Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the University Center.
“It’s pretty much a preliminary thing at this point,” Meiring said. “[Last Thursday] was an interest meeting. I think it will happen, but it’s about a year or two off.”
The team is looking to start practicing regularly once the local ice skating rink reopens. From there, they will work on becoming legitimized as a part of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), according to Meiring.
Philip Fink, a coach for the men’s hockey team at CMU, hopes the interest for a women’s hockey team will keep rising.
“I don’t know if there’s enough interest in it right now, but maybe in a couple years it’ll happen,” he said. “They have to start somewhere to build it up.”
