Renaming of CMU’s Academic Classroom Building (ACB) and ACB II (currently under construction and scheduled for completion next fall) is well underway. A naming committee comprised of students and faculty members met last week to sort through over 500 names which had been submitted by students via MavZone in the previous weeks.

“ASG and President Foster decided that we wanted to pursue temporary renaming of ACB and ACB (II) about a month ago,” Student Body President Ariel Diamond said. “The idea behind it is putting a temporary placeholder name chosen by the students just so they’re a little more exciting.”

Diamond, former Student Body President Telbe Storbec, and Assistant Director of Student Life Mackenzie Eikamp met with CMU faculty and administration members Carol Futhey, Pat Doyle, Rick Taggart, Derek Wagner, Jennifer Motz, and President Tim Foster in an attempt to bring together marketing, academics, administration and students to collaborate together.

“We wanted it to be a smaller group so decisions could be made, but we wanted it to be a well-rounded group of people that are all doing different things,” Diamond said.

The committee members each chose names that they liked and worked together to remove names that weren’t considered serious, such as Mary Jane Hall, as well as names that would be perceived as a dedication.

“Since they’re not permanent names, we really wanted to stay away from dedicating it to someone, because you don’t want to have to someday remove that name and cause hard feelings,” Diamond said.

CMU is currently looking for donors to permanently name the buildings after with bids sitting somewhere around the $1 million range.

“Most of the names ended up being geographical locators,” Diamond said. “The names that everyone really liked were really specific to the Western Slope and are unique to our area.”

The committee narrowed down the list to 12 names, which will be sent out in another survey via MavZone. The standing names include Aspen Hall, Centennial Hall, Dominquez Hall, Escalante Hall, High Desert Hall, Independence Hall, Juniper Hall, Kokopelli Hall, Liberty Cap Hall, Uncompagre Hall, Roan Plateau Hall, Tabeguache Hall, and Wyngate Hall. Students will have a couple weeks to cast their vote for their favorite name choice, and the top two will become the temporary names of ACB and ACB II.

“The process is going to go pretty fast, and we will notify the people who chose the winning name,” Diamond said.

The winners will receive IPads for their contributions, though it remains unclear if everyone who submitted similar names will receive the prize.

“That’s up to the President’s Office at this point on how many people will receive the prize if there are multiple entries with the same name,” Diamond said.
