Mavericks notch historic win in weekend sweep

Sophomore Patrick LaPorta is pressured while bringing the ball upfield during Friday night’s decisive 3-1 victory over the Cougars.

CMU men’s soccer began the week with a historic program win.

Spencer Jackson and Stevie Palma netted goals for the Mavericks in a 2-1 decision over No. 22 Colorado School of Mines at Walker Field on Tuesday. The win was CMU’s first win over the Orediggers in the short history of the team.

Jackson put the Mavericks ahead in the 23rd minute with his second goal of the season. The Orediggers responded immediately after halftime with a strike in the 47th minute, but Palma delivered the final blow with a strike from outside the box that soared over the Oredigger goalkeeper in the 79th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Micah Conrads was awarded the win with an impressive eight-save performance while only allowing one goal.

“That game was huge for us because every year we come so close, and this year, we were finally able to get the win,” Palma said. “This was a statement win for us.”

The Mavs backed up their historic performance with a convincing win over Colorado Christian University.

Jackson continued to shine with another first half goal to put the Mavericks in the lead. Defender Blake Carlson tallied his first goal of the season in the first half as well as off of a cross from midfielder Marco Escobar in the 33rd minute for the 2-0 lead. Legofi Crawford finished the scoring off of a feed from midfielder Sean Foster in the 61st minute for his third goal of the season.

The Cougars would break the shutout with a late goal, which put the final at 3-1. Goalie Brandyn Bumpas recorded the win with two saves and one goal against.

“Beating a ranked team in Colorado School of Mines and a good team in Colorado Christian has given us a lot of confidence,” Palma said. “It still depends on how the teams ahead of us do for us to move up, but it was important to win out this week to improve our standings in conference.”

The Mavs (7-4-3, 5-2-3 RMAC) will travel to Durango and Alamosa this week to play Ft. Lewis (7-5-1, 4-5 RMAC) and Adams State (6-6, 4-5 RMAC).
