Club sports offer athletes competition, recognition

Most athletes who play in high school plan on playing in college as well, but what happens when they don’t make the varsity team?

Students like Cody Andrews get involved in club sports as a way to continue playing at a high level.

Having played baseball since he was four years old, Andrews tried out for CMU’s club baseball team after he didn’t make varsity.

“It would be nice [to play varsity] because it’s more competitive,” Andrews said. “But I’m still glad to be playing.”

Andrews played baseball this past summer to stay in shape in hopes of playing at CMU. When he found out club baseball had just been added this fall, he figured he had nothing to lose and tried out.

Club sports are a way for athletes to work on improving and maybe even get noticed by varsity coaches, so working hard and playing well is a must.

“If we do well, we have the potential to move up to varsity,” Andrews said. “So the guys are serious about playing but still know how to have fun.”

He thinks that club is a great way to play sports competitively while still having time for homework and a social life. It’s is a good way for some students to ease into the level of commitment athletes face.

“Club is more relaxed,” Andrews said. “We don’t have to do weights and stuff like varsity, but you still have to care.”

Andrews and his team practice two to three times a week and play games on the weekends, which makes balancing school and baseball less overwhelming.

“Club sports are great to get recognized, but also to stay active and get a break from school,” Andrews said. “I personally feel like I do well when it comes to school when I’m playing sports because I don’t have the time and opportunity to slack off.”

Andrews is excited for their upcoming season and to be playing baseball in general.

“We have a really talented group of guys, and playing with them has been a way to socialize and meet new people,” Andrews said. “That and I just love the game.”
