U.S. adores 16-year-old music prodigy

By now there’s a very small chance you haven’t heard the insanely catchy “Royals” by New Zealand singer-songwriter Ella Maria Yelich-O’Connor, better known as Lorde. She is just 16-years-old, and she is already hitting the international music scene with her debut album “Pure Heroine,” released September 27.

It almost seems impossible to like a song and have it stuck in your head more than “Royals,” but almost every song on “Pure Heroine” falls under that same category. Although it is fitting enough to call Lorde’s music electro pop, her voice displays an element of soul that brings all of her songs down to a chill vibe that is still extremely catchy and upbeat.

A few noteworthy songs from the album include “Tennis Court,” “Team,” and “Glory and Gore.” Each of these tracks does a fantastic job of showcasing Lorde’s pure talent as a vocalist. She is, without a doubt, an alto, and a fine one at that. Her sultry voice is paired perfectly with the steady bass and intricate lyrics you would be surprised to hear coming from a 16-year-old.

And perhaps that is the only somewhat negative thing about this album — the fact that she is so young can be a little distracting if you think about it too hard. However, her music is nothing at all similar to that of teen pop sensations like Rebecca Black or Justin Bieber.

Lorde, at such a young age, can already be labeled a musical prodigy (she began songwriting at age 12) who has managed to produce an entirely original assembly of music enjoyable for listeners of all types.
