The Point opens shop

The Point, a student-run pub and coffee shop, is opening its doors today at 11 a.m. Located in the former Yoshi Bowl on 12th Street across from Moss Performing Arts Center, The Point offers opportunities to relax, hold meetings or just enjoy drinks and food in a welcoming atmosphere.

The Point will offer “coffee, blended coffee drinks, local wines, beers, Coors Lite, three microbrews, including Dirty Hippie,” Professor Georgeann Jouflas, who is the faculty helping to oversee the project, said.

There will also be a menu of appetizers and main dishes, which will include a base of lettuce, naan bread, quinoa or brown rice covered with toppings of the customer’s choice.

“We’re going to stay, for the food, between the five and seven dollar range,” Jouflas said.

Drinks will range depending on the purchase but should average around $3 to $5.
Jouflas and the students are excited to finally open with “all these little things coming together,” Jouflas said, including the addition of an espresso machine, the lack of which had delayed the opening previously.

“Everyone wants it to open, but they don’t realize all the little things that go into it,” Jouflas said. “Our goal was to really promote students’ hands-on learning.”

With 25 students now trained to work at The Point, it seems that this idea was a success, but the real experience is just beginning.

“We will just soft open for a week and just work out the bugs,” Jouflas said, adding that the grand opening will most likely take place in November.

The Point will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
