Women wrap up fall 4-0

The Maverick tennis teams took on the Roadrunners of Metro State this weekend in an offseason matchup that had some top tier athletes on display. The matches wrapped up fall play for CMU tennis.

“The fall is really about trying to get a lot of matches and compete in a small window,” coach Dan MacDonald said.

The women’s team had a successful day on the courts, defeating the Roadrunners 6-3 after defeating CSU-Pueblo earlier 8-1.

The men’s team, however, lost narrowly in a 5-4 decision.

The Lady Mavs started off hot, winning in all three doubles matches. Natalie Martin picked up wins in both No. 1 singles as well as No. 1 doubles with her partner Kaylee Davis. Shannon McNamara and Kristyn Wykert won at No. 2 doubles with McNamara winning at No. 2 singles and Wykert at No. 4.

Jordan Lyden took care of business for the men in the No. 1 singles match, defeating Josh Graetz 7-5 and 6-3. Graetz was able to exact his revenge as he and his partner defeated Lyden and Spencer Weinberg at No. 1 doubles 8-3. Sophomore Blake Demond defeated Trevor Jones at the No. 5 singles match, winning 6-3 and 6-2.

The wins put the Lady Mavs at a perfect 4-0 in the fall season, and MacDonald has very high expectations for his teams as they prepare for the spring season.

“We got a lot of bang for our buck,” MacDonald said. “We got a lot of younger guys some duel and tournament style of play and experience. The men barely lost in a match that could’ve gone either way, but overall I’m very pleased of how we played this fall, and I feel we will be in good shape come spring.”
