Swedish Duo does pop right with ‘This is…Icona Pop’

Icona Pop couldn’t have chosen a better name for themselves.
The electronic pop duo, consisting of Swedish best friends Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo, released their second studio album, “This is… Icona Pop,” on September 23. The album is stacked from top to bottom with 11 catchy tunes that are the best example of pop music done right.

Their most popular song “I Love It” and its equally appealing follow-up, “All Night,” start the album off on a note that leaves the listener with the urge to keep jamming out.

Each song on the album is catchy and upbeat in its own right. Two of my favorites were, arguably, “Ready For The Weekend” and “Girlfriend,” the latter of which incorporates Tupac’s lyrics from “Me and My Girlfriend” in the chorus. “Ready For The Weekend” sounds the closest to dubstep with heavy bass and a melody that’s likely to get stuck in your head.

Although the album as a whole can be considered electro and synthpop, there are a few tracks that come close to being ballads, including “Just Another Night” and “Hold On”—although the bass stays heavy on these
tracks as well.

Those who are opposed to music that “sounds the same” should be wary that “This is… Icona Pop” falls just below the line of that criterion. But if you’re looking for something to get you pumped for a night out, Icona Pop’s album does the job perfectly.
