King writes sequel to “The Shining”

“Doctor Sleep” is a newly released novel by Stephen King, written as a sequel to “The Shining.” The story was really enticing. You could be a first-time King reader and still understand most of what was going on.
In all honesty, I was not prepared for this book. I had previously only read part of “Dreamcatcher” by Stephen King. It had also been a long while since I had read that book, and in that time I had forgotten that King likes to elaborate on everything. The images in his writing were crystal clear and extremely powerful. I liked his descriptions to an extent. When it came to the action where one should be on the edge of the seat about fall in anticipation, the detail sort of got in the way. Also, King has his signature dark side. His descriptions of the dead and rotting were so detailed that I wanted to have a trashcan near just in case.

I absolutely loved the way King always had you guessing. Everything the main characters, Dan Torrence and Abra Stone, did, until about two-thirds of the way in, had you puzzled on how everything would tie together. In the end, I was sad it was over.

If you can stomach some strong imagery and enjoy a good supernatural plotline, I would definitely recommend “Doctor Sleep.”
