The Point pushes past road blocks

CMU’s first pub has faced several minor setbacks concerning its grand opening.

The Point, which is a student-run business governed by CMU’s Entrepreneur Club, originally intended to open its doors Sept. 30. According to Point manager Kim Weber, E-Club is now shooting for Oct. 7.

Despite the rumors circulating that the delay was due to a bathroom violating health code protocol, the real reason behind the delay is equipment delivery and installation.

Weber articulates that outside vendors are the cause behind the delay, stating, “We’re at the mercy of their deadlines, schedules and pricing.”
The delay is due to the fact that the company Turbo Chef manufactures and delivers their equipment on a need-to-order basis. Equipment was not ordered earlier due to the Entrepreneur Club working its hardest to make sure it gets the best deal.

Once the equipment is delivered and installed and the plumbing is done, The Point will be ready to open its highly-anticipated doors to the public.
The Point will have a relaxing atmosphere that students won’t find at a bar or club downtown. “We are going to set the precedent from the very beginning that this isn’t going to be a nightclub. It’s going to be a pub and coffeehouse,” Weber said.

The Point also plans on pairing up with CMU’s theater, music and art department for entertainment and decor. “We don’t want to make this just about the business department. We want incorporate all the other concentrations offered on campus and are definitely setting up with the music department,” Weber said.

When it comes to food and beverages, The Point has paired up with Grand River Vineyards to offer local wines. Local microbrews will also be offered, and a beer of the month from either the valley or the state, along with the local beverages, fan favorites such as Coors Light and Angry Orchard will be available for purchase.

The Point will not be offering Kannah Creek microbrews because of the Colorado state law that demands businesses to go through a beer distributor.
Along with finger foods such as build-your-own pita pizzas and a salad bar, The Point will offer at least one entree a week.

“We will offer one hearty meal a week, at least on Fridays and Saturdays for the kids who may live on campus but want a good alternative meal to the UC,” Weber said.

The Point’s goal is to offer food that the public is not going to find within walking distance of CMU’s campus.

No student specials will be offered, and to prevent underage drinking from occurring, The Point is working very closely with the Grand Junction Police Department Liquor Enforcement and they will have an ID checker at the door who will check everyone’s age upon entrance. All IDs will be scanned at the register with any purchase of alcohol.

The Point will be open Sunday through Wednesday 11 a.m. to midnight and Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
