Race to rename buildings begins

ASG and student input have helped start the renaming process for two buildings on campus, ACB and ACB II, where construction will be finished by fall 2014. According to CMU Director of Media Relations Dana Nunn, neither of the buildings have gone through an official naming process. Even ACB, which was completed in 2008, “got its name by default,” Nunn said. ACB was the name used in construction papers and later in the class scheduling software, and the name stuck.

With the construction of the new classroom building, students decided that ACB II was not an acceptable name, and as a result, ASG put together a competition to come up with new potential names for both buildings.

“When ASG asked President Foster about what the new building would be named, he left it up to the students,” Nunn said. “I believe some students, faculty and staff cringed a little at having a new classroom building called ACB II.”

The contest is open to all CMU students to submit a name idea by Oct. 16. Names for the building should be based on “local or state geography, topography, flora or fauna,” President Tim Foster said in an email to students, but the buildings cannot be named after organizations, people or businesses.

“This is not the first time students have had the opportunity to name buildings on campus,” Nunn said. “Students named both Garfield Hall and Grand Mesa Hall. Garfield Hall was originally slated to be called Renaissance Village, but students said they didn’t like it and selected Garfield Hall in recognition of Mount Garfield. When Grand Mesa Hall first opened, it didn’t have a name. People just called it the new hall, which evolved into New Hall, which evolved into Nuhall. Again, it was students who decided to name the building Grand Mesa Hall.”

After the names are submitted, ASG will choose finalists that will then be open to student votes through an online survey.

“It is also important to note that the selected names may not be permanent,” Nunn said. “The winning names will remain in place until a donor can be secured, and then the buildings may be re-named.”

However, until that happens, the students’ building names with the most votes will be applied after final approval.

To submit a name for consideration, students can find the link on their MAVzone home page. The winners of the naming contest will receive an iPad.
