CMU’s women’s rugby team held its first game of the season on Saturday and dominated by a landslide. The Mavericks beat Utah State University 103-0.

Utah State tried to put up a good fight, but ultimately it was not enough. For 80 minutes, CMU showed just how dedicated they are to the game.

“We started off the game with a lot of energy,” sophomore prop Lehua La’a said. “Within the first few minutes, we were able to score a try, which set the pace for the rest of the game.”

Mindy McCracken scored five tries, making her the scoring leader. Jackie Stults and Ariana Ingalls scored three tries. The backline was able to run some trick plays, which gave CMU an extra edge over the Aggies.

The energy and enthusiasm gave the Mavericks the advantage on the field.

“The game was an eye opener, especially to the girls who don’t have a lot of experience,” Stults said. “I think that this game has set the bar for the rest of the season.”

The team of young women were eager to play and show everyone what they have been working so hard for. Out of the 32 players for CMU’s team, only eight of them are returners from previous seasons.

The Mavericks play Utah Valley University Saturday at Dixson Park. The time of the match has not yet been announced.
