ASG update

Though ASG President Ariel Diamond, Vice President Ashley Pulido and Chief of Staff Jack Bryan were not present for the first 20 minutes of Wednesday night’s meeting, senators and other officers were busy continuing plans for Homecoming and discussing the upcoming senatorial election.

One bill was passed unanimously, granting CMU’s Physical Educators’ Club $2,717 to attend the Colorado Association for Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s (COAHPHERD) annual conference in Denver, Oct. 17-19.
Physical Educators Club President Michael Myer stood in front of ASG members and presented Bill 13-06 with the support of four fellow club members who were seated behind him.

“A whole lot of what is presented [at the conference] is new information or a twist on information,” Myer said. “We try to take as many students as we can so that they can get some professional development in some of the over 80 forums.”

After a few questions from Senators Colton Vaughan and Ryan McConnell regarding the club’s current budget and past fundraising efforts, the bill passed 9-0.

Diamond and Bryan arrived midway through Wednesday night’s meeting after a dinner with the Colorado Capital Development Committee.

The committee is comprised of five state legislators who visited the CMU campus to discuss the $18 million proposed renovation of Tomlinson Library and the $7 million proposed update of the Student Health Center. The Student Health Center on Orchard Avenue will eventually house CMU’s Nursing Department and will allow students the opportunity to assist in the clinic, according to Diamond.

“We set a great example of responsible budgeting,” Diamond said. “There’s the possibility that the [library] project will be 100 percent funded without having to increase student fees.”

However, Diamond added that due to the recent flooding and subsequent damage to vital infrastructure on the Front Range and across the state, “this year might not be too great for capital projects.”

Plans for both renovations are ongoing and will continue to be a focal point of discussion within ASG and around campus.
