Philosophy climbs to new major

The CMU Philosophy Club has a lot to look forward to this year with the establishment of a philosophy major, kicking off charity work with “Bjorn’s Children Fund” and continuing Wednesday rock climbing as well as incorporating other outdoor activities.

The club, which has around 40 members, has been talking about a philosophy major for quite some time. After looking at the statistics regarding CMU students minoring in philosophy and the number of members in Philosophy Club since 2009, the dream for a philosophy major at CMU is finally becoming a reality.

The major, which has been approved, is currently going through the curriculum committee. Following the school’s accreditation this year, the committee will incorporate the major.

Every Wednesday at noon, the Philosophy Club meets at CMU’s Outdoor Program to rock climb.

“There’s something to say about rock climbers and philosophy,” Philosophy Club president Andy Bowen said. “When you’re up the side of a mountain, whatever move you’re about to make is terrifying, shouldn’t be possible, and if you don’t figure it out, you’re going to get hurt or worse. If you can figure that out in your mind and then go back to school, you’re suddenly going to have a more creative thinking process, which is applicable to anything in life.”

As philosophy is such a broad discipline, the majority of the club members come from many different walks of life, and, all bring something new and unique to the table.

“I hope to encourage people to think about the big political issues, and imagining what other kinds of societies are available, opening up their horizons for new political organizations,” Senior CAB representative and history major Remy Currier said.

“Philosophy Club is not just Philosophy Club, it’s more about having a strong enough mind to observe what’s around you to make things work,” Bowen said.

This year the Philosophy Club is doing charity work for the “Bjorn Children’s Fund,” in which 100 percent of the proceeds go toward medicine, clothing and technology for children in third-world countries. The club is also partnering with Snow Slay and KMSA.

Philosophy Club meets every Tuesday at 4:30 at either the Ale House or on campus at the University Center.
