Mavs’ offense sputters in weekend sweep

Redshirt-sophomore Ashley Wallace attempts to move the ball downfield during Sunday's 3-1 loss to Texas A&M - Commerce. She had two shots on goal for the Mavericks' struggling offensive attack.

Lightning filled the sky during the Mavericks’ “Pink on the Pitch” game Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Mavs, lightning couldn’t strike on the field.

The Mavs went 0-2 this weekend playing two Texas teams, starting with Midwestern State Friday night.

It’s not too often you hear a coach wishing a team had been more selfish. After Saturday’s loss to Midwestern State 1-0, Coach Erin Sharpe wished just that. The Mavericks women’s soccer team opened up Friday night on Walker Field. The Mavs dominated time of possession and had numerous opportunities in front of the goal, yet failed to capitalize.

“We were too unselfish with the ball,” coach Sharpe said. “When you have a chance in front of the goal, you have to take the shot. We kept trying to get another pass in or take another touch, we have to take more shots.”

Both teams played with high intensity, the lone goal came on a counter after a Mavs shot attempt was cleared and sent long up the field. Kensli Pounds for Midwestern had a one-on-one with keeper Sarah Shnetzler. Shnetzler made contact with the ball but it ricocheted off Pounds, who put it in the net.

Sharpe didn’t have much room to be upset.

“We really controlled the entire game well but we need to be better on the offensive end,” she said. “We have another chance to make adjustments on Sunday.”

Sunday was the Annual Pink on the Pitch game for the Mavericks. The Mavericks quickly found themselves down 2-0 to Texas A&M Commerce, before Julia Kranstover scored the first goal for the Mavs this season off a header, the cross coming from Leilani Wiernicki.

During halftime, Walker Field had to be evacuated due to lightning in the area. After about an hour delay, play resumed. With the field drenched, conditions were not ideal. A long ball from Commerce took a high bounce and over the head of Shnetzler which put the game out of reach at 3-1. The Mavericks failed to find any scoring threats up top, and couldn’t get any good looks on goal.

“We are still a young team,” Weirnicki said. “We have two true freshman up top that are still learning the speed of the game. We just need to work harder in practice and get after it.”

The Mavs (0-2) have a week to practice before heading to Texas for the weekend to end regional play against Texas – Permian Basin (0-2) and Angelo State University (1-1-1).
