Compost facility breaks ground

Spades hit the ground last Wednesday as CMU’s Sustainability Council ushered in its exciting and innovative compost facility at WCCC.

“We’ll hopefully finish the bins today, and then we can start composting in a couple weeks,” Composting Director Audrey Carlson said.

During a groundbreaking ceremony, Ryan McConnell, President of CMU’s Sustainability Council, said, “Today is about changing our culture into a more sustainable lifestyle where we’re more connected to our food and the soils and nutrients that produce it.”

“The Sustainability Council is really heading this project,” ASG President Ariel Diamond said. “However, it is its own entity with its own directors and three student interns.”

The directory board is composed of a variety of individuals who share a common interest in sustainable options for CMU. Diamond currently serves on the board until a permanent student from WCCC can be found to take the position.

“This is a really beautiful opportunity for students and faculty to interact,” Diamond said. “This really teaches students how to utilize what they’re learning in the classroom.”

“It really kind of rounds out the circle of life for our own campus,” Diamond concluded.

Students have been hard at work making this dream a reality, and now CMU can look forward to an even greener campus where food waste is used as fuel for eco-magic.

“We’ve been working hard for over a year now, and it’s finally here,” Carlson said.
