Ivy leaguer joins music department

There’s a new face in the music department of Colorado Mesa University with extensive credentials and love for what he does. Most of the chatter around campus about Dr. Joung Hoon Song is about his degrees: a bachelor’s from Juilliard school of Music, a master’s from Yale in music, and a couple doctorates in violin and viola performance from Boston University, to name a few.

Song was referred to Mesa by a fellow alumni from Arizona State University.

“One of the great things at this institution… I can do various things such as conducting, which is my passion, my violin teaching, viola teaching, as well as chamber music, and also classroom teaching,” Song said.

Song said that he has so far enjoyed his time at Colorado Mesa University.

“I feel like I’m living inside a postcard,” he said, describing the CMU campus.

He also praised the students and faculty.

“They all communicate very well,” he said. “It is a very relaxed environment.”

When Song was college-age, he had the dream “to become one of the great teachers.”

“I’m here today so I can teach the students,” Song said. “To teach all levels of teaching… I have special solutions for everybody.”

Song shared some advice for new freshmen.

“Study hard, but celebrate,” Song said. “Celebrate life. If you enjoy, you will actually go further.”
