K.C. Royals hold tryouts in Junction

Former starting pitcher Matt Williams was one of the former and current Maverick baseball players who participated in the open tryouts held at Grand Junction High School.

Rumor has it that around one in 10 male baseball players will go on to be drafted by a team in the MLB. With the odds against you, a dream can be shut down within seconds.

On Saturday, the Kansas City Royals held an open tryout camp at Grand Junction High School.

The tryouts were open and free to anyone over the age of 16 years old. Maverick baseball players such as Aaron Corwin, Braden Box and Erik Kozel, along with former starting pitcher Matt Williams, represented the Mavericks’ baseball team.

After the tryouts wrapped up, Ken Munoz, who has visited cities like Denver in the past for scout trips, explained that he wanted to give smaller areas just as big of an opportunity.

“I just wanted to go to a different area to give kids out here an opportunity to show what they’ve got,” Munoz said.

He continued that some people may think that Grand Junction has little potential compared to bigger cities, but he saw something more and isn’t looking for anything specific. It could be any position.

He also stated that even if they didn’t find exactly what they were looking for, he has a few guys he has his eye on over the next couple of years despite no one making the team over the weekend.
